Bark at the Moon
Not many pictures were taken during the vocal session. We recorded in the black of night during a new moon. So instead we have some hair, a baggie full of dirt from Bram Stoker's old apartment (where he wrote Dracula) and a adorably frightening handmade Nosferatu. The holidays have kept us busy but we remain on our track to grimmdom. The vocal tracks were difficult as this is our first record featuring the human voice...though the final outcome is completely sub-human. The recording was done in a room with 15 foot high ceilings and a large diaphragm condenser mic (in pitch blackness) and then re-amped through a ad9 analog delay and 15inch speakers. The howling seemed to channel the deepest dark unknown and we were both left feeling out of sorts to say the least. Now we move to the difficult phases of finishing a record.

A mention/review of PussyGutt and Alter from the blog omgvinyl.
If you saw the name “Pussygutt” in the post title and you are still reading then these two pieces of vinyl might be just what you are looking for. Pussygutt and Alter (featuring members of Pussygutt) both dabble in a brand of doom that relies as much on emotional heft as amplifier distortion. Not many snare drums or bass pedals to be found here; what you do get is some cinematic, moody music accentuated with some huge, fuzzy guitar riffs. Easy music to fall in love with… and then slit your wrists to. You can listen to both bands at their respecitve MySpace sites (alter and pussygutt). Alter’s self-titled LP is limited to 300 and Gathering Strengths is limited to 550, so if you decide you cannot live without, email pgvtt333 (at) gmail (dot) com to order copies or check mimaroglumusicsales.com (who also carry about 500 other albums you need to order).

We finished tracking the violins this weekend. We ended up running through a tube amp w/KT88s and spring reverb. Two mics on the amp, one mic in the room and one mic about 4 feet off the violin. Once we got the sound right, the performance was nailed in one take...amazing.
Next, on to vokills.
In other news Gathering Strengths is officially available to distros worldwide tomorrow.
Alter is 98% done with a second record and searching for a label to collaborate on a release.

PussyGutt Recording
It's the weekend again. We continued our recording session from thanksgiving weekend.
We got in some guitar over-dubs on one of the two songs. The tracks sound killer! Three cabinets up and running with five microphones soaking it all in.
Our friend Tristan let us borrow a kick-drum mic for the session. We used this on one of the cabs with 15" speakers. It sounds heavy and mean- perfect for this track.

More Gratitude...
PussyGutt is thankful for recording sessions.
We used our down-time over the thanksgiving vacation to get in a gratifying recording session.
We began the process of recording our current set before we move on with some new creations that have been arising. We are trying to establish this habit - documenting, recording and giving our current works the full attention they deserve and then move forward with new creations.
This record will consist of the pieces we played for our last little jaunt of a tour and what we played for the hometown record release. If you did not get to see this live, you will now be able to hear it at some point.... when it is released.
Friday was spent cleaning up after mega-family-get-together and tons of delicious food. Then setting up the drums and wrestling some good tones from those nefarious skins.
We then ran through the pieces to check out how much separation we need for the guitar cabinet, and get a little practice in.
We had some trouble with a couple mic placements. Tuning the drums is always a huge challenge. This is especially aggrevated by slightly warped toms.... Luckily one of the band members is a wizard of tuning drums at this point. You'll have to guess which one it is!
In the end, we got the bass drum sounding huge, the toms sounding dark and sinister, the cymbals are shimmering and glassy-goodness, ringing tones from the belfry.

Gratitude
Tour Was Excellent
Snoqualmie greeted us with the fogs of time
rain of saints
and trees of antiquity

Though the van may have been dying,
our souls were smouldering in rays of light
searing the moody blanket of cloud.

***These were the only pics gathered. The snoqualmie photo-shoot was grand and devoured the camera's battery life. Thus, the music and sights stand on their own. You must witness for yourself the live pgutt.******

Alter - Debut Release in October 2009
The Debut Release from Alter will be available late October 2009.
Here is a description compliments of Dave from 20 Buck Spin:
"In the mist a bell is tolling and the crow sounds his dire warning. The funeral shroud adorns its lifeless bearer. Alter creeps like the fog of a thousand weeping brides, a serenade of gothic tragedy consumed by loss and battered by countless defeats. Alter, one half of the bleak doom ghosts Pussygutt, sings a lament of sorrow under a cold full moon. A mystical tale of dark, dreary sadness told by candlelight in the graveyard of centuries past. Succumb to despair and taste thy grief everlasting. "
